I spent yesterday, adding the corners to every other block in the center.

I also, moved the monogram square to it's rightful place...

I am good with it, I think they will stay. Besides, they have to because I cut them...

and now have a pile of little half squares. I don't think I can through these away, they are just too cute!

FRIDAY NIGHT SEW -IN, RESULTS...

Last night while it snowed and the winds whirled outside, I was warm and cozy in sewing room. I am happy with the progress I made

I finished up the sq. blocks and filled the design wall, to get a feel for the layout. That large blank block in the lower middle is for a monogram. The pattern also, calls for 1/2 sq triangles(background fabric) on every other corner of the inside blocks. Which would give it two different block types(regular sq & snowball) I like it this way, but will try the 1/2 sq triangle on a few to see what I think.

Most of the night was spent roofing my houses.

It seems, like there are house blocks all over the place these days and while I like them I wasn't convinced I needed to make any.

Until, I saw these made up into a little quilt at my LQS. It is a simple quilt but I fell in love with it and kept going back for second look.

Obviously, I couldn't resist and the kit came home with me. I am modifying the original just a bit, to make it bigger. More to come, stay tuned!

It's a cold & blustery night here in Eastern, Iowa. It looks like it will be just the dog & I for most of the evening. So... no I mean, Sew? Why yes, I think I will. It's the FNSI, Friday Night Sew In!

This bundle of Reindeer Games, by Sandy Gervais has been slashed, and is a work in progress.

SO's nephew is getting married in April. I decided to create a Christmas theme quilt for the couple.

I only have 5 blocks to finish up, before I start the next step.

Then, I will work on roofing these little houses.

I am loving this little project!

Once again, I have been MIA. It was not planned and I won't give you any excuses. Life is a bit crazy these days and about to get crazier. I will share more about that later in the week. I am afraid if I go into details now, I will jinx the whole thing. You know bad juju...

I have some BIG plans for 2012 and can't wait to get started, actually I have started and will have lots to share.

I realized I never showed the "other side" of the Christmas Swap bag I had made for my partner.
So, here it is...

I was happy with the end results of the bag and thought it made up a fun holiday bag. It's from basicgrey's holiday line, Jovial. Would love to have a bed quilt made from this line.

INS AND OUTS OF THE SWAP...

I was recently a participant in the DS (Denyse Schmidt) fabric, doll quilt swap on flicker. The participants were international with most coming from Australia/NZ and North America. We were a small but, very fun and polite group. We are all fans of the Denyse Schmidt fabric lines. The focus was on the Picnic and Fairgrounds lines that were released through JoAnn Fabrics.

Here are a few of the pieces from Picnic and Fairgrounds. Some of the line was exclusive to the US and some to Australia but, all fabric played very nicely together. Between the two lines their were 31 pieces.

I ordered a FQ bundle from a gal in Australia, so I did have the complete line to play with. The only limitations were to stay within the Picnic and Fairgrounds fabric lines (solids ok) and keep the quilt size under 18"x18".

I will say this "this swap DID NOT disappoint."

Lorraine, from Australia sent me all this... (post cards showing the town my quilt came from, very clever!)

This was her first swap and claims, she has only made two quilts in her life! But, on the other hand has sewin for many years. Well, I was amazed at the small quilt. Her work is exceptional and she used, so many techniques in this little quilt. It's hard to see but, the leaves and tree 3-D.

This lovely little quilt is my treasure to keep!

I am truly smitten!

After the excitement of receiving her quilt, the one I sent to my partner seemed so...so, boring.

I was recently inspired by the fall sky's and the geese that are migrating.

I knew my partner like the blues and greens in the line and especially the dots.

Well, this is what I came up with...

Not so exciting, compared to the one I received. I did, however accomplish my goal and used all 31 pieces from the two fabric lines. All in all, I really enjoyed this swap and the participants could not have been nicer and a VERY talented group of ladies.

deep sigh... It's been a long week and yes, I will have to work a half day tomorrow. But, I am REALLY glad that it's FRIDAY night and I can't think of anywhere else, that I would rather be than in my sewing room playing with these...

First Applique...

Is finished and it only took two years!!! Wow, finally it's done. Darling Daughter and I started this adventure two years ago, when she came for a fall visit. We worked on it again the next fall, when she returned. I promised, another fall would not go by without it being done, and it it is...

I love the colors and the layout, but I hate the piece. Well, that is how it finished. This was my first attempt at applique and had I known... I would have not let so much time lapse in between having worked on it.

I messed up, literally. I used spray adhesive and pins, lots of them! The piece over time and lots fondling during the quilting process began to loosen and while I noticed it, I didn't realized what was happening and it stretched.

The end result is the piece, did not remain flat and taunt and in looks rolly. It was too late, to do anything at this point. I was not starting, all over. I had too much time vested and I would just finish it. IF... I ever make the attempt to applique again, I will keep at the quilting until the piece is done. I hate life's lessons, especially when it can be prevented!

Warning... This post drags, blah, blah, blah...

I mentioned in my last post that I had set my "focus" on something this summer. Well, that focus has been me! I had a reality check this spring when we had visitors and pictures were taken, I was appalled...I literally gasped when I saw them. I later had my own pitty party and shed tears over what I had seen. I hardly recognized myself and no, I won't share those pictures. I was out of control and knew the only way to fix it was going to be through myself. This I know...If you do what you always did, then you will get what you always got!

I also, had a milestone birthday approaching and knew I had to leave my 40's behind and go into my 50's feeling better.

It began slow through proper nutrition and exercise, I have lost over 35lbs and figure I am about halfway to where I need to be. I want to get to a weight that I can maintain and feel comfortable carrying. The number is not important to me but, how I feel.

Though diet was my main focus I also, incorporated exercise. I have always enjoyed walking but wanted more of a challange. I wanted an accomplishment! I decided I would train to run my first 5k. Well, last week I turned 50 and today, I celebrated!!!

I ran my first 5k and I am tickled to say I completed it!!! I wasn't the fastest but, I found my pace and ran my race! I finished the run without stopping and it felt great!!! The camera man didn't see the extra batteries I had set out so, there were no finish line pictures but, I do have a medal to prove!

I had told SO, that I did not want anything for my birthday but time. I wanted to hang with him over the weekend. We have both had a rough summer with obligations at work and have not had much together time. We even took seperate vacations to visit our kids. We could not coordinate our time off together, that sucked!

SO, told me not to make plans... as he had a surprise. We were going to be out of town over night. I asked him what I needed to pack and he said, casual would be fine. Then he did drop one hint, Galena! That is Galena, Illinois. I love this area, it is so beautiful. Picture perfect!

About halfway there, he called to confirm his plans. I could see on his face, it was not good! The weather was not going to cooperate and they were cancelling the evening flight!

This is what was planned...

We tried again the next moring but again, the weather did not cooperate. I was touched by the fact that SO, wanted to give me a memory for my 50th Birthday. We did make memories...

We had a nice dinner, and meandered in and out of the quaint shops that line the curvey main street. This town is so romantic and full of ambiance...

We also, took a run down the alpine slide...

This was so fun, you ride the sleds down the run, which decends a half mile down the hills to the bottom where the Mississippi River lies, across the river is Iowa. Again, views are breath taking. Then you ride the chair lift back up and do it again!

I had a terrific time with SO and I am happy to have celebrated another birthday. There was a time I despised them but, now I embrass them!!!

I am promising, quilty things to come!

REASONS / EXPLANATIONS = EXCUSES...

I have so much on my mind but, yet nothing to say... My blogging hiatus was not planned. I cant blame it on an exotic adventure that took precedence. As a matter of fact, I found that the longer I stayed away the harder it was to come back. I wanted something spectacular to show you but, that didn't happen. I worked on numerous little things over the summer and have no "grand project" to share with you at this time. I have about six projects that need a day each to finish.

However, I did focus on something this summer and will share soon, it takes place this weekend and no I am not having a baby!

I also, took a new position at work that is proving to be a challenge. I use to walk away from work and leave it at the office, now I find that I am bringing it home with me, in my head! Not bad but, yet it's with me.

Here are a few pictures from our visit up to Minnesota over the 4th of July, to visit with SO's folks...

SO's dad has a great hobby... wood working.

I had requested that SO and his dad work on something together. His dad had most of it together when we got there but, there was plenty of sanding and final assembly. Isn't it awesome, they used maple.

This is going to be my curio/quilt cabinet....LOVE THIS!!!!

While the guys were in the wood shop, I played on his mom's mid arm...

I doodled and doodled... Lots of fun and more practice needed before I attempt a real project.

My reasons/explanations for not blogging only = excuses. I have missed the quilting communtiy and I am happy to say, I AM BACK!

My first five blocks for the Farmers Wife Quilt Along. It's a bit addicting and yet, a bit over whelming at the same time. The group on flickr is amazing and I am constantly in awe of what everyone else is doing. There hasn't been a day go by that I haven't re-thought my blocks, because I am loving what I see others do. It's fun creating these little guys, but I am going to take it slow.

CRAZY... I am starting another one! I have so many projects that are waiting for TLC. BUT, this QA is eating away at me. The QA is Simple Things... being hosted by Charming Girls, Kelly of Charming Chatter and Carol of Brown Quilts. There are two project sizes to choose from. I am hooked on the big one by Carol but, I am loving Kelly's little version, too!

I want to make Carols version large enough to fit a queen size bed. I am trying to figure out how to grow the quilt without ruining the integrity of her design. Suggestions, are very much appreciated. I am not a math whiz and don't claim to be but, I know it can be done! Might have to get SO involved in this!

Part of my justification for starting this project is one, I have all the fabric in my stash. I over bought for a mystery QA that I ended up opting out of and was left with oodles of the fabric line Sunkissed, by Sweetwater. Reason two, is that SO and his dad have drawn up plans to build a bed frame. We up sized beds a few years ago and have never had a nice frame for the bed. Well, with a new bed in the makes, there certainly should be a new quilt, right?

I should note, I won the second fat eighth. So, as you see I have truly been Sunkissed! Do you see that nose in the picture?

Anna, had a Dr visit today for shots and regular check up, she has been extra clingy. Her tail wagged the whole time I was taking the pictures, she thought it was all about her, as usual!

They have only posted the cutting directions. It's not too late to join in, you know you want too!!!

I made these for DD. She picked out the fabric when she was here this spring. She thought it would make up cute pillowcases for camping, she was right! Are these just not the cutest? She will have one classy camper!

What a win...

This is the bounty, I won a couple weeks ago from Ryan, over at I'm Just A Guy Who Quilts. When I entered I assumed the items were to be split amongst many, as he was giving away so much! When I saw my single name, I was elated, and amazed that all the loot was mine. Dang, near left me speechless!

He also included an extra pattern, Read Between the Lines. It's from his pattern company, Patchwork Squared. It looks like it will make up quick, using 4 charm packs and some extra yardage. I will be making this one!

I am joining... The Farmers Wife quilt-a-long, over on flicker. (take a peek, it's very inspiring and growing across the quilting community).

My reasons for wanting to make this quilt are probably more sentimental than most.

My friend Lynn, sent me a copy of "The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt" by Laurie Aaron Hird after visiting her ranch in Idaho, last year. She had a copy and I could not leave it alone. Shortly, after arriving home I received my own copy in the mail, courtesy of Lynn. She, has been known to feed my quilting passion, of which I am very grateful! Yes, I am drawn to the challenge this quilt presents and I want to create an heirloom. However, the main reason I NEED to make this quilt is...

In my past life I was "The Farmers Wife." Yes, I was married to a farmer in North Eastern, North Dakota. I grew up in Arizona, a city girl and married the "boy next door" to grama (whom, I visited in the summer). He happened to be the son of a farmer and the rest is history... My three children, are farm raised. I have since moved away but, all three kids still remain in the North Dakota, all with agricultural connections

My daughter is now, "The Farmers Wife" and is raising her family on a farm. So, it only seems appropriate I make this quilt.

I am going to use Denyse Schmidt's line, Picnic & Fairground from JoAnn's (I was impressed with the quality of this line and I have been accused of being a fabric snob!). I purchased the fabric earlier this spring and was waiting for just the right project. Well, this is it! It has a vintage, yet modern flair and think it will compliment the quilt nicely. I have also ordered a bundle of the Australian cousins from this line and will incorporate some other fabrics to compliment.

I will probably be slower than most creating my blocks but, I look forward to the challenge!

It was a Nautical & Nice Weekend...

OKAY...FIRST, is there nothing more irritating than when you actually have something to say/share/show and you CAN'T ??? I have been trying since Sunday evening, to post and all it did was sit and spin. It has been such a long dry spell for me, that when I finally have something to share...I am silenced by blogger, GRRR...

Anyhow, I am here now...

I have, had these 4 charms packs of Nautical & Nice that I have been dreaming of cutting into.

Literally playing with time and time again.

I have other things I should be doing BUT, I CAVED TO TEMPTATION!

HST, is was... and LOTS, of them!!!

Then the creativity began. SO, has caught me a good half dozen times playing with them. He, calls them my building blocks! He said had he known how entertaining they were going to be, he would have encouraged me sooner to make them, ha!

It's a toss up between pinwheels and the zig zag.

AND just when I thought I was done trimming up all those HST, I found a hidden pile. At least 50 more blocks which creates 100 more, HST. OH, dear!

Swap in, Swap out...

I have been involved in a number of swaps this spring. A couple of pincushions swaps. One, of which I received nothing in return. Oh well, I guess that's a chance I take signing up. Leaves me feeling greedy for signing up for two. Should have been happy with one!

I also, took part in two eye spy swaps. I now have over 200 4" squares to use in my own eye spy quilt.

It's a quick, easy way to get a variety of novelty squares.

Then there is the Red & White swap over at Sew Many Ways. We are exchanging 5" squares and in return will receive back 125 Red & White squares. I can hardly wait to see what variety comes back to me.

dogs in sweaters, golf balls & tees, Christmas candy, Christmas lights, tennis shoes, birds & nests, nuts & bolts with wrench's, animals, pink spiders & webs, and lastly dinosaur skeletons.

I am participating in another I spy swap. This time over at Green Apple Orchard. When I get the blocks back I will have a nice variety of blocks, over 200 4" blocks. Not sure how many a person needs to make a lap size quilt. Has anyone done one of these? If so do you have a pattern suggestion or thoughts on a layout. I have something in my head but, might be needing more blocks.

Still Waiting...

For Spring here, still cool and raining again!

I had a day off midweek, ALL to myself. SO, is CRAZY BUSY at work, the paper work is official as of today, the Casino sold and the new owners have ownership. SO, has LOTS and LOTS of changes ahead. It is bitter sweet for him and, is going in with an open mind. With all that is happening at work for SO, it leaves me with a lot of time to myself. I am trying to make the most of my time with projects. So, when SO is back to a somewhat normal schedule and the weather warms up, we can play outside together.

Match Game...

Do you ever have something in your head that sits there for a long time... Well, this is what has been sitting in my head ...

This is my version of a match game.

My grandson Logan who is two and a half was coming to visit and I wanted a simple game that he and I (or more) could play... or he that could, play alone.

I created game pieces out of novelty prints, that I thought would interest him. (the print in the upper right hand corner is potatoes, they are farmers and potatoes is one of the crops they grow, so that was a given).

All that was left, was to play...

I made up twelve different sets. He was more interested in the game when we played with just half of the prints. He was able to remember better where he had seen something and would go back to it. What was great about this game was he basically could not harm the pieces. He enjoyed hauling them around and would even just sit and study them. I meant to take more pictures but, as usual we get caught up and lost track of time.

If you click on this picture it will give you a good idea how I finished the pieces off.

I found a container just his size, that he could carry around without worries of breaking and could open up by himself.

I sent half the game home with him and have kept the other half. Every now and then, I will send him another match set to add to his set.

Over all, I would say it was a success!

(oh, by the way... I had to pull him away from washing the dishes to play this round... hence the wet shirt!)

Pin cushion swap II....

Life has been busy... "A GOOD BUSY." My DD and grandson Logan have been visiting from ND. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF THIER VISIT and will share more of that later.

However, this post is about the pin cushion I created, for the second pin cushion swap. I showed you my mini string blocks a while back (oh geesh, I just realized it was my last post). Oh well, this is what I did with them...

I am tickled with how it turned out... It's "original and cheery" which is what I had hoped to accomplish!
The recipient lives in England, and I am pretty sure she doesn't read my blog. So, I am going to show you the fun card I found that I have included...

Unfortunately, I did not meet the swap deadline (today!) but, I am hoping it will have been worth the wait!!!

I am participating in an I Spy swap over at Hendrixville and each participant is to send 20-4" squares from 10 pieces of novelty, "I spyish" fabric these are my selections. In return we get back 200 different (hopefully) pieces. I am actually sending 11 different pieces. I am concerned about the quality of one my selections although it did come from a QS, so thought if the I Spy guru wanted to switch it out she could or everyone gets an extra!

The Birthday quilt, that almost was'nt... (part II)

A quiet weekend around here. Which is a good thing as I am fighting with a cold, it's trying to take over and I am fighting back but, starting to feel like I am loosing ground.

However, lots of quiet time allowed me to finish the binding on the Birthday quilt...

If you look straight across the middle, this is where the extra cut was made (by me!). Originally, I thought I had blown it all together and it was going to be too obvious. BUT, I sewed it back together and pondered. Here is my thought... this is a quilt for my 2 year old grandson, it is not a "show quilt" nor is it a quilt made for a bed spread, it is meant to be drug around and cuddled with. It is meant to be loved. I don't think he or his dad will notice the flaw.

Here is the big picture... I love the colors and masculine designs. I have had a hard time finding fabric for boys that I like. I also came to the conclusion, so what if it is a little messy, it's no different than grama's kisses...XOX

The Birthday quilt, that almost was'nt... (part I)

This will be for my youngest grandson Lane, who will be 2 in April. I fell in love with this line of fabric and knew that I would have to make it for one of the grandsons. I have done this pattern before and goes together quick and looks more complicated than it actually is. Well, this time it did get complicated! I mis-cut, giving me an extra seam on the bias, as if two weren't bad enough. It was REALLY wonky. My heart sunk, the flaw runs right through the middle of the quilt and jumps out at me!

I left it for a couple weeks, not wanting to quilt it. I had planned to do it myself and when I went to lay it out, the wonky was even more obvious. I have a friend who has a long arm and she thought it could be saved, so off it went. It's now back and I am working on the binding. Stay tunned...

Without taking a picture, or two. I am participating in a couple pincushion swaps this spring. The first one wraps at the end of the month and this should have been in the mail a week ago as it has to travel to Canada. When SO got home from work Friday evening he said "pack a bag" were making a road trip to Minnesota! Army man is flying out, Saturday night back to Alaska for 20 days and then off to Afghanistan and I want to have dinner with him before he leaves. We were in the car ready to go and I ran back into the house to get the pin cushion, telling SO, this has to ship this weekend!

So away we went... We got to SO's folks home (the in laws) @ 2am. Saturday morning I got up and made my way to Target to get a shipping envelope. I was in the parking lot, addressing the envelope when it occurred to me that I had taken a picture,! So ... here are a couple quick shots, courtesy of a shopping cart. But hey, at least I remembered!

My partner for the swap does not have a blog, so we swapped a couple emails. I was a able to figure out she doesn't much care for pink and loves paisley! Hope this will do!

Saturday night we enjoyed a casual dinner with Army man and SO's parents before he left for the airport. It was well worth the drive for a couple more hours to visit with Army man.

Busy...

Life has been busy around our place lately and not much sewing has been going on.

Things are getting back to normal after a week of company. We were blessed with a visit from SO's sons. Son #1 (Boat man) who came from Arizona with his girl friend and husky, Jaxon. Son #2 (Army man) came from Alaska. Army man is on a short leave from the Army before he has to return to Alaska and then on to Afghanistan (proud to have him serve his country but, creates a heavy heart for his family).

There is not a whole lot of activity in Eastern Iowa this time of year. We are waiting for spring (however it did get to mid 60's today, woo hoo! We did do some eagle watching along the Mississippi (I found an eagle feather that I passed on to our guest), did some sight seeing in Galena, Illinois, spent an evening bowling, and one day the others went pheasant hunting @ a game farm(which the dog is paying for! she has not been out hunting in 2 years and over did it, she required a visit to the vet and is now under house arrest, no activity for 3 weeks!).

There were dozens of eagles in the area, which is an impressive sight! However, my batteries were dying, so my photos were few!

I liked this shot of Army man standing on this dead tree which is frozen in the water.

This is a sign of a good fishing hole... If you click on the picture you will see at least 5 or 6 lures/bobbins which were hanging in the tree! I will be going back here in a few months, to see for myself!

Every now and then I was able to sneak into my sewing room to play. I am working on "color/quiet books" for my little men. I saw these on someone else's blog and knew I had to make my own. I ordered the letters from the book designer here... and she cut a couple "custom colors, gray & aqua" per my request.

These house blocks are my final blocks for the Circuit Block Party, online Quilting Bee...

For the past year I have been a member of the Circuit Block Party, an on line quilting group. We were 12 ladies from all corners of the world, US, Canada, UK, and Australia we had enough members that we could each have a month, through out the year 3 dropped out leaving 9 of us. The group is disolving, but were offered the option to join into another group as the Bee Mom had 3 Bee groups and was combining them to make one group. I have opted out. It was a great adventure and definitely a growing experience but, I found myself got "hung up" on the fact that if I had bee blocks to do, I felt guilty working on my own stuff. I know, there is that guilt word again!

I loved seeing and touching the fabrics that the other group members would send each month with their block request. I liked the fact that this group at times would take me out of my comfort zone and presented some new challenges, such as paper pieching that I still , don't get it and found it to be VERY frustrating. I also discovered that I liked working on "improve" blocks. I had never done them before and was very intimidated by the thought but, once I got going, I had fun! I did receive some GREAT blocks back from the group during my month and will be sharing those with you in another post, as I am ready to start creating a layout with them.

Another door closes, but the window in my mind has broaden and things I have learned belonging to this group will stay with me, as I look forward to the next phase of my quilting journey!

This is my Madeline, Schnibble... a UFO carried over from last year. I finished piecing her this week and she is ready to be quilted.

She may look familiar...

You see, I first saw this layout last year over at Kim's Big Quilting Adventure. I was infatuated and asked permission from Kim, if I could duplicate her layout and she was gracious enough to say "yes." I am a BIG fan of Kim's. She has a fantastic eye for color (brights, especially that I just love) she is VERY creative and she can can always turn a quilt "into her own" her talents put me in awe.

I spent the afternoon working on Madeline. I sewed two and ripped out one, or was that sewed one ripped out two? It is slow going. I am not to crazy about this quilting but, my last attempt at free motion was a disaster and I am just not up to attempting it, at this time. I am going to give it at rest for tonight. I am tempted to rip it out and start over, just not the effect I was looking for.

STRESS RELIEF!!! However, I am not sure just one will do today! This is the last one in the house, so I am safe. It is a raspberry, dark chocolate dessert bar from Weight Watchers and very yummy, you would swear your being naughty!

I kid you, NOT I have been working on this post for over an hour and this is as far as I have gotten. I can not get my project pictures to load. They just spin and spin and then when I finally did got one loaded it covered the page and was extremely distorted. I am wasting time, precious sewing time!

My project for the day is a UFO, I started last year at this time. It is my Madeline Schnibble and she is decked out for Valentines Day! I have to admit, I like this one and it really irritates me that I can't share pictures of her (YET!). She is ready to quilt and I am hoping to get done to send off to DD in time for V-Day.

I am almost afraid... with how today is going, is this day an omen? Will my quilting be doomed???

FEAR NOT...I shall PERSIST!!!
P.S. my sewing room is upstairs and computer is downstairs, so it will be a while before I try and post again!

I just got home from work and I can't tell you , how nice it is to come home and join in with the Charming Chatter girls and their "word up" sewing party. I had to work this morning and a typical Saturday is light, stress free, and goes fairly quickly. WELL...not today. It was a busy, stressful, and simply a frustrating day, that seemed to go on FOREVER!!! Enough whining...

I am happy to home with you gals and anxious to get started. Give me a few minutes to catch my breath, get a quick bite, and get things in line and I will be back to give you a peak at what I am working on!

FYI... my word for the year is "persist" which also, translates into "I shall have perseverance!" I am going to carry on, keep on moving forward!

What's a grama, to do???

I have mentioned before, that I have two grandsons Logan & Lane. They are just 5 months apart in age (respectively 2.2 & 1.8 years old). I found this adorable flannel (great quality and super soft) I bought all they had. Not exactly enough to make a decent quilt for both of them. Keep in mind both little boys have been born to parents with, STRONG agricultural back grounds, and it will be part of their lives too. My dilemma, which one gets this adorable print made into a quilt???

Neither... because grama, has to be fair!!! So, I split it and made, pillowcase's...

These are going to be their Valentine's with a little extra love from grama, inside!

If only, I could deliver them in person...

Tackling, a UFO... I pulled out the "heart quilt" I had pieced 4-5 years ago and finally got up the nerve to attempt quilting it myself. I would attempt, meandering loops w/ random hearts. I have a fab-u-motion for my machine (the Viking version of a stitch regulator. Not difficult to use but, not something I want to set up and tear down daily) I figured it would take me a week or so to complete, trying to space out my sewing, as to not reek too much havoc on my shoulders and back. I don't use the fab-motion enough to be "good" but manage.

Anyhow, I plugged away at it and did a good amount on Saturday and finished on Sunday. WELL.... apparently on Saturday, I had not adjusted my tension (something that has to be done, every time you turn it on!). I did not discover this, until I was finished or so, I thought!

SOOooo, now I have to rip out, all that I did on Saturday and "redo." I am wondering if I should just rip out the whole thing and start all over??? I suppose, I can chalk it up as "good practice" but, what a waste of time. It looks, like this will remain an "unfinished Valentine," another year, or two!, GRRR....

I finally have it!

I have been reading so many post, on "Word Up." The idea is to find the one word that will describe you in the year to come. Believe me, I have mulled over this word. I have read many post and everyone seemed to have, just the right word. There are some GREAT words out there!

But, what would be "MY word". I had a short list and occasionally, would add too it or scratch one off. But, my word... just wasn't there. I really wanted to be "true to myself and my expectations for my quilting journey." Then it hit me, and I'll be darn... it was already on the list!!! So, that must be "MY word."

PERSIST, is my word. I want to persist, to move forward, to continue, to carry on, be persistent, in all aspects of life!!! However, linking to my quilting journey... I think about quilting, ALL the time, it is ALWAYS in my head but, when it comes to doing it! That is another story...

I often ask, what is it, that is holding me back? It's generally, me (right now, I am dealing with the winter blues). I sew for me (well, usually it's gifted to someone else) but, I sew to satisfy me, to find a creative outlet, to enjoy the process, to have a reason to buy wonderful fabrics (fabric fondler, here!), or simply because I can. I love the feeling of accomplishment, when something is completed. I get bogged down with guilt when I start "another project" and I have so many unfinished, that could be done if I would just give it the time! With all this being said... I am going to become a MUF's girl, MUF's "Masterpieces Under Fermentation."

I am going to let go of the guilt and sew for myself, what I want, when I want, and enjoy it!!! Occasionally the "deadline," will loom and that is OK, too!!! I know a long post but, it's been building inside and I just had to let it out!

First Finish, 2011...

My first finish of 2011, has been a WIP (work in progress). It was a wool kit, project that Lynn (my Idaho, friend and hand project expert) had gifted to me a couple of years ago. It sat in the packaging the first year out of shear intimidation, as I had never worked with wool. Then last winter I was able to spend a few days out in Idaho. That is when Lynn got me started on a smaller project, which I quickly finished. Feeling more confident, I went home and started in on the cardinals and a year later...here they are! Thanks Lynn, I love working with the wool and definitely see wool in my future. I like having something to work on when SO are watching TV.

This weekend was great!!! SO, treated me to my "Christmas present." More on this later...

My Holiday Adventure, 2010...

Warning... this post is a bit lengthy.

The week before Christmas, SO and I took an evening trip to Galena, IL for the Christmas Walk. The town on any day is incredibly beautiful and oh, so charming. The Main Street remains in it's original form. It is a quaint curved street lined by small gift, boutique shops, and numerous fine dining restaurants on both sides. This winter night, is was particularly beautiful... The town was lined with over 5000 luminaries. The pictures just do not do it justice and it didn't help that my camera batteries were low and my camera kept shutting down...grrr. (clearly, operator error) ohh, and did I mention it was cold...VERY COLD!!! here are a few poor quality pictures...

Anyhow, after dinner we were strolling the streets enjoying the romantic ambiance and gazing in the store windows, pretending the cold wasn't bothering us when...There "I saw them!" Houses, Beautiful Glittery, Christmas Houses. I collect vintage ornaments and these houses would be a great compliment to my collection. My camera was dead by then and it was getting late and we needed to head for home. I woke in the morning still thinking of the beautiful little houses. SO, suggested I check on line. Well, I forgot to get the name of the store, I started putting random things into Google to see if I could find them. Finally I put in Galena shops and after calling only 3 shops, I found them @ Fairytales Too!!! The clerk at the shop guided me to their web-site and there they were!!! I showed them to SO and he confirmed , "yup, that looks like them!" In the next breath, he told me to place my order and yes, you can get the trees too!!!

SO, you are RIGHT...I am spoiled!!! But, then who is to blame for that???

They arrived just in time for Christmas and I must say, I was every bit as tickled unpacking the boxes as when I first saw them in the window. I am truly infatuated with them...

I did not get them "displayed" as I would, had it been early in the season but, I did put them up and here they are...

I ended up with a church, 2 houses, and 6 trees. Yes, the houses light up and next year I will do that as they are properly displayed. This year, I was simply satisfied to have them.

What to do, what to do...

I made an attempt, to update my blog today and created a BIG MESS. I was able to retrieve part of my old info and get a somewhat normal look, so that will have to do for now. I had other things on my mind today!

I dug into my WIP pile and came out with this...

This quilt goes back to my quilt beginnings. I think, it was my first attempt at picking out fabric, without guidance, yikes.... I did manage to get it pieced and then it was set aside, for quilting. WELL, what am I waiting for? This little quilt needs to be finished in time for use in February.
It's pinned and ready, just not sure I am!!!

UPDATE... I am halfway back to my original template/layout. I have no idea how I got here but, I am leaving it for now. I don't have time to mess with it now, so will have to leave it, in this "UGLY" stage.

HELP!!! FABRIC SEARCH...

UPDATE: " I FOUND IT!"... or should I say... "IT FOUND ME" I did a fabric search. Could not have been simpler, I found the search info on a "quilt store site." It simply gave me an email address to write too and give as much info as possible and that the search would go to 100's of stores.. I was lucky to actually have a fabric number. I sent my email over the Christmas holiday and by Tuesday night I had more than half a dozen responses from quilt stores. I have place my order and as the say "it's in the mail!"

Thank you to all who responded with their offerings and suggestions, quilt bloggers are a great bunch!!!

I started a project, after the Christmas season last year and put it to rest. I came across it again and

wondered why did I not finish this? It's far to cute, not to have finished! As, I looked through the cut pieces it all came back to me... I was short fabric, this fabric...

It is moda, Glacier Red #30187 from last years "Figgy Pudding" line by basic grey. Yardage would be ideal but, will take anything, including FQs and scraps!! I will be cutting strips of 2.25" by 8". If you, or someone you know who might collect reds have this in your stash and are willing to part with it PLEASE, leave me a comment. I am willing to BEG, buy, and/or trade!!! Just in time...

I am happy to say I have a finish, just in time to get into the mail and off to my youngest grandson, Lane who is 18 months old. I had this pieced last year and when I went to quilt it, my machine copped an attitude and it did not get finished so, it was put away in a drawer and almost forgotten.

I am pleased with this happy little quilt. It is bright and cheery and full of texture. I used flannel, minke, velveteen, and a very soft fuzzy white. I experimented with the backing... I bought a micro fleece blanket at a discount store and did not use batting. This blanket is soft and flimsie and sure to be a petting delight!

There is only one thing wrong... I won't be able to snuggle and rock with him.

I think this blanket will do a good job keeping him warm, he lives in Minnesota.

A gift from my Secret Santa...

This lovely table runner arrived in my mailbox last week, it is from my Secret Santa. My secret Santa was Sunny, her blog is Quilting Dreams. It is a nice big size that fits my table(which is currently hidden under a pile of packages, getting ready to ship!). I love the rich colors of cream, green, and red she used. Her quilting was just right to compliment the piece! I took a couple pictures to show more detail.

For my Secret Santa...

The Snowman Trio...

I am, done with my Secret Santa project. It seems like ages, since I have had a "good finish" and this was no exception. Perhaps that is because I have been working on three of them at the same time. The other two need buttons and the binding tacked down and they will be done. One for me, one for my DD, and of course the other is for my Secret Santa.

My Secret Santa turned out to be a "real secret" for me. A couple months ago, I received the blog address of my Secret Santa (who I have been spying on). A couple weeks later I received their mailing address. Well, last night as I was preparing my package I noticed the name on the address and the name of the persons blog were two totally different names, different states, etc. I sent off an email to Joan and this afternoon she confirmed, I had two different people! My Secret Santa was the person who's address I had. Not, the blog address person, I had thought. So, my gift will be going to someone I didn't "know of" until today. The surprise was on me!!! I think my Secret Santa gift is neutral enough that any quilter would enjoy it... so I am hoping!

If feels good to have a finish and perhaps it will keep me motivate to keep on, keeping on!

Umm... I would like to buy a vowel, please!!!

Perhaps, it would help me with the puzzle of life. There are times in my life, when I feel in control and on top of things. Right now, not so much. I feel, as though I am spinning my wheels and getting no where. In other words, I have too many irons in the fire!!!

I have LOTS to do and can't seem to get things finished! I am on the verge of finishing a few projects and working on prioritizing. Soon, I will have things to share. Here is a sneak peek!

THE MIGRATION...

Okay... I feel my attempts at sewing and blogging have been meek lately. I am working on yet, another NEW project!!! I am looking for quick gratification and I do believe this project fulfills that need. This one is quick and fun and I am in LOVE with the rich fall colors. You, ask what does MIGRATION have to do with this???

Well, my flying geese are preparing for their migration south and here is a teaser of what is to come! I use to live in the "migration flyway" while raising my children in North Dakota and every year I was in awe of this flight of nature. How hundreds of thousands of water fowl birds would make the trip (actually twice a year). On their way to nesting grounds up North in Canada and then make the same trip to winter down south. It was truly a sign that the seasons were changing and an awesome sight.

I still stop in my tracks when I see a flock of geese move across the sky.

So here, I share with you my migration of geese...

SLOW...progress

DD and I started this project last fall when she came to visit. Keep in mind this is our first applique project. Well, here we are a year later and just now, putting it together. I am happy to say everything is in it's place! NOW...it needs to be finished, quilted, etc. We took it to a local long-arm "custom quilter" for her thoughts. She, is truly an artist and her recommendations were: to use metallic threads, and add some other bling, etc. I could see on my DD face this was not what she wanted, so we thanked her for her time and took the piece with us. My DD had a great analogy: "you don't hire an artist to paint your room red!" WOW... she nailed that one right on the head!!! So, with that being said I am giving thought to finishing the piece myself. I am petrified, to say the least! Does anyone have advice for tackling this project? We feel the piece needs to be kept somewhat simple. It has a LOT of color and want to do it justice. I would appreciate any input, advice, or recommendations you have. Ohhh, by the way we also have another one in the making. We each wanted one!

Come & Gone... but, not without REGRETS!!!

The AQS show in Des Moines has come and gone... It was a good time had by all! Pictures you say, well I did not take my camera into the show as I was told pictures were not allowed by most vendors, etc and I figured it was just another thing to carry. I can respect that, so no camera in hand (regret that now!). More often then not the vendors asked that you not take pictures but, some exceptions were made, for instance if you were buying the pattern/kit. I did take a few pictures of us "hanging out" in the hotel in the evenings, more often than not with a project in hand. Those pictures are on my DD camera, including the picture of me and the girls from Idaho. These girls know how to turn out the projects, their combined knowledge is deep and I LOVED playing 20 questions with them!!! We shopped , ate, and roamed the show for 3 days. It was great; lots of quilts admired, many ideas gathered, and plenty of future projects bought. Thank you to Lynn, Marilyn, & Julie for coming all that way and especially for sharing your expertise with DD, who started her first wool project with their guidance. She has finished it and looks forward to another!!!

Shop Hop...

Since I will be attending the AQS show in Des Moines in just a couple of weeks, I can not justify any current fabric purchases, unless it is to finish something or...(exceptions, can always be made! after all, I consider myself to be a flexible gal). Anyhow, I thought to get the creative juices flowing without putting on too many extra miles and hours.

Friday Night Sew In Results!

Well, prince charming did show up and swept me away...
But, not before I was able to get some sewing time in.

The project that was begging to be picked up was the "Charm Pack Quilt Along" that was hosted by Kerrie Lynn over @ Freckled Whimsy. Some quick details of the quilt along; were that it took 3 of the same charm packs and yardage. We would make the same block using just half square triangles and four patches. She offered 6 different possible layouts, using the finished blocks or of course you could create your own. The actual quilt along is done(however, directions are still on her sight with a link to a "flicker show & tell"). Many are still working to finish, which includes me! The little time I did spend last night was productive.

I was able to finish the 175 HST and 75 four patches.

Now for the fun part... start laying out the blocks. I have been accused of being a control freak so I decided in order to get a "true scrappy" look I would separate both block types and remix them in bags...
reach in and layout the block with whatever I drew out of the bags...

See... I can be random

I mentioned, earlier my production would be determined by when prince charming arrived home. Well, I am happy to say I was able to get a few blocks done. Now I can get a feel for how this is going to come together.

Ohhh, by the way... prince charming whisked me off to "MY BIG FAT GREEK FESTIVAL." Where we enjoyed a beautiful evening outside under the stars feasting on Greek food and enjoying the people watching, which involved lots of children and adults taking part in the evening activities, including traditional Greek dancing.

Woke up to rain this morning so my plans for Farmer's Market are out...guess, I will have to sew!!!

HOME ALONE!!!

I have no idea when SO will be home. So, or is that sew, I am off to my sewing room to play! The projects in progress are plentiful. I will have to see which one tickles my fancy first. I will do my best to keep you posted and if I don't return, you will know prince charming came home early!

Dual post... GOALS... left behind & going forward...

I have not been looking forward to this post. You see, I did not succeed in the goal department.  I set goals for July/August and with disgust I can say I didn't do well completing them. Partly due to me and partly due to life interrupts! I DID complete my entry into the Schnibble Times Two Contest. I DID get two small quilt tops for charity made, however they still need to be quilted. I also, started another project: charm pack quilt along, this was not on my goals list. Like I need to add to my projects list!

Sooo, now I need to set my September/October goals and it is the middle of September! SO, wants to get in some more motorcycle riding while the weather is good and this really cuts into my sewing time. I will also be going to the AQS show in Des Moines the first week of October AND if that wasn't exciting enough, my DD is going to also meet up with us later in the week and then return back home with me for an extended visit! Accompanying her will be my grandson, Logan who turns 2 in November. She and I do have a couple things we would like to work on but when little ones are involved it takes a back seat and besides he and I have some major playing to catch up on!

Here are my "SOFT GOALS" **meaning I am going to remain flexible and nothing is set in stone.**

     -     Make "match game" for Logan.

     -     Finish the two charity quilts.

     -     Quilt Halloween Table topper.

     -     Work on the "charm pack quilt along."

     -     Work on "fall projects" with DD.

     -     Enjoy fall and the time that will be spent with friends at the AQS show!!!

Is it just me, or did summer just slip away??? I could of swore it was just the 4th of July. The end of July/August brought lots of family time!!! Which we truly love since we no longer live close to any of them. Late July we joined the members of SO's family in Minnesota to celebrate his parents 50th Anniversary. A good time was had by all!

   Then came August and SO attended his youngest sons  Advance Individual Training, Army graduation in San Antonio. We now have a paramedic in the family! The good part of this, was SO brought Army son home for a brief visit before his next assignment in Fairbanks, Alaska. This meant the world to his dad too have more time with him.

SO's parents, also came for a short visit. We always enjoy their company which includes a lot of visiting and card playing.

In August I was also, treated to a visit from my oldest son who delivered the "entertainment package!" My youngest grandson, Lane. I totally applaud him for making that long drive with his little man, I know people who think driving across town with toddlers is too much, yet a lone an 11+ hour drive, one way!!! Lane is 16 months old and full of energy. I had not seen him since May and at that time he was still getting his land legs beneath him(very wobbly). This visit was much busier. We had a great time playing and getting to know each other, what a sweetheart and he likes to cuddle with his grama!. He was very amusing and gave Anna a run for her money, she loved all the attention.

When all is said, and done...

Then with company gone and summer slipping away. We took a bike trip over Labor Day weekend. SO had upgraded our ride this spring and we had only taken it out on short day trips...so, it was time to see just how the new bike traveled. We left on Friday evening and when all was said and done... we traveled through 5 states (IA, IL, KY,TN, and MO. We arrived home Monday evening with 1350+ miles under our bums. SO, had gone above and beyond to make it comfortable for me. He invested(I could have bought lots of fabric with what, he paid for them!) in "air cushions" which were amazing, and really did make all the difference for being able to sit for long hours at a time on the bike. I would say they were worth every penny! We saw some beautiful countryside.

It was one of those places I have always wanted to go too! Well, I was not prepared... It was not quit as I had envisioned it! Honestly, I was hoping it would have been more inspirational, more samples and ideas, The store is VERY large with row upon row of fabric, warehouse style. There were some great remnant binds with good prices. I did not buy anything off the bolt and when all was said and done I had a Kona jelly roll and a few remnants, spent less than $50!!!  AND, SO was buying!!! They were more than willing to ship my purchases home... WHAT THE HECK YOU SAY???

Well, in October I will be attending the fall AQS show in Des Moines, IA with 3 friends from Idaho and would rather have EXTRA $$$ for that trip as I have heard the shopping is abundant!!! IF...I still have your attention at this point has anyone ever been to the Des Moines AQS show, what can a girl expect??? Is anyone going to the Des Moines, AQS show?

This was another live and learn lesson, not smart to wait until the last minute (not enough time for a fix/redo!), lets just say she has some "character" but, I still wanted to show her off. She is sweet, fun, and charming and will be a cozy addition to the holidays! I met a goal and have a July finish! This was my first Schnibble and I will definitely be Schnibbling again!!!

"Charming Girls Quilt Club" Do I join...or don't I? I have been pondering this question for a couple weeks now.

***Prepare yourselves, this a lengthy post without pictures!
BUT...this is something I am doing for myself!!!***

Why join?

      - To belong to a group of gals that share a common interest and passion, with whom you can share thoughts and ideas.

      - Because I have been a secret admirer of this group since I discovered them earlier this year watching quietly, ~~stalking~~ (nah, that's a bit creepy), lurking in the shadows, eewing and ahhing,  and reading (thinking they have a lot of fun).

      - I feel the need to be "accountable"... BUT!!!

      -  I enjoy a sense of "belonging."

     - It is a way to expand my creativity.

     - I do like to have a good time!!!

Why Not?

            - Because I have a fear of commitment, especially when I have put myself out there but, yet I know I need to! I hate letting others down!

      - I procrastinate... I think, umm... because, I can???

      -  I am a terrible decision maker (But, this would be a step in the right direction, right?). This has been a real challenge when it comes to fabric choices, I like it all!!! (just some more than others!)

      - Do I have the personal time to do this "right?"

      -  I am slow, at sewing. I like to take my time, I like to understand and follow directions (this can be a hang up!). I consider myself a "copy cat artist" (I try to be original but, when I see something I like, I know it. So please don't be insulted but, take it as a compliment if someone likes what you do and wants to know how you did that!!) I do better when I can "see" what I am doing, and where I am going. I have been told I am a perfectionist and can be my own worst enemy.

      - Ohhh.... gosh, I read this and start to sound like a "nut case."   Honest, I am not. I probably over analyze things too much...sometimes.(right honey?) Will they like me, will I let them down? Will I have anything to offer?

Well...Do I or Don't I????

YES...I DO!!!

I want to join, I want to expand my horizons and grow as a woman and as a quilter! I want to be a BETTER person!!!

The theme for July/August is SELF/CARE!

So here are the personal priorities I will strive for:

1. Start eating SMART & get my SO to eat SMART with me. Something fellow bloggers don't know... ( I lost 50 lbs last year and now I am struggling...I have started to put the weight back on and I am embarrassed and ashamed to admit that!) I know what it takes but, currently I can't get myself there...ugh!!!)

2. Exercise...something, anything! Walk, ride bicycle, run, just get moving! Something is better than nothing!!!

3. quilt - MORE,   browse - LESS... ideas are great, inspiring, and stimulating but, it comes to a point when it then becomes an excuse not to get myself in gear and CREATE!!! Always, afraid I am going to miss something!

4.  Make the time to be a passenger on the back of the Harley with my SO (this is his passion and he has gone out of his way to make it comfortable for me, so I will share in this adventure with him!). AND , he even stops at quilt stores along our way...however, 10 minutes before they close is not enough time to "take it all in"... a hum!!!

Here is my list of sewing goals for July/August... (gulp...am I really, doing this???)

4. Donation quilt + 1

HOW, am I going to get this all done if I am on the back of a motorcycle? Cutting and piecing are definitely out!

The BIG...Red, White, & Blue!!!

Happy 4th of July to my fellow Americans!
I am celebrating in style this year. I actually finished my BIG Red, White, & Blue quilt and she has been on my bed for a few weeks now. I experienced some emotions with this big quilt. This was my first attempt at multiple stars and I was so fixated with the points that I over steamed and stretched my blocks. Resulting in having to cut a few points on the outer edge to keep the quilt square...needless to say it was a sad day and I contemplated wither I should even have it quilted. On the good advise of others (thanks Kim :) and my SO, who reminded me not all is perfect in the world! I proceeded and I am tickled with it, LOVE it as a matter of fact. I have Mary over @ Quilt Hollow to thank for the quilting, she did a great job!

SO...with all that being said, I hope you enjoy the holiday, however you should choose to celebrate...
I know, I will be sleeping under the stars!!!

Making my way back...

Well...I am "making my way back" into blog land. I have NO BIG excuses or at least I am NOT going to use them here, other than "sometimes life interrupts." I kept up on my "reading" but, not on my posting. After having been away so long I question if I should just be a quiet blogger and only read others (my followers are few). BUT, I do feel I have things to share and occasionally "show-off." I currently don't belong to local quilt groups and have been somewhat disappointed in what my local quilt shops have to offer with the exception of one. However, soon after I moved to the area a year ago that shop made the decision to stop offering classes/workshops. That is when I started to get explore the online quilt blogs and a "real" friend invited me to join an online virtual bee group, that too has been a struggle for me. BUT...I am here to say I am NOT giving up. I will work to earn my followers and hopefully that number will grow.

The pictures below are of a lap top quilt "Jelly Filled by Thimble Blossoms" I recently finished for a wedding gift. Darling daughter picked out the kit(with some guidance from me where to find it) and I did the work. We wanted this to be a "keepsake" for a special young woman and her new husband. **the day I was taking these pictures we were having ANOTHER nasty storm rolling through and I has home alone so the lighting distorts the beautiful colors of Verna that were used.**

Sweet... I love the border on this little quilt. This was a quick and easy project and the borders were definetly the icing on the cake. I am please with this project, now to figure out how to quilt it.

Friday Night, I was SEW THERE...

Last night was the Friday night Sew-in and I have to say, it was a productive night for me. I selected an easy project. All I needed was 2 charm packs and some yardage. I think my pictures will explain the process...

oops...

I still had a few extra charms squares so this was an easy fix.

I managed to get the inner border on before calling it a night. Sometime, this weekend I will get the outer border attached. As for right now... It is beautiful outside and SO and I are off to enjoy it!!! Hope yours is a good one!

I have always had a thing for the classics(I like vintage, antiques, old) and a red, white & blue quilt has been on my list of wants. I am just not sure...I like this quilt. It is very busy. It is somewhat outside my box. But then, just what does the inside my box look like??? I am trying to "experiment" in my quilting journey and try a variety of styles and techniques. I guess this quilt would be considered traditional and I am thinking maybe... I am more contemporary(easier patterns!) but...then I would like to think I like a little bit of everything. After all "variety is the spice of life" right? NO the quilt,is not done, it needs borders(inside border is red/white stripe and outer boarder is a light cream with flower spray, there is already a taupe, navy and blue spray version of this fabric used in the center) but I find myself asking... what was I thinking, do I like this, will the borders help to calm the quilt, should I invest in custom quilting or will it just make it all too busy???? I want something to compliment the quilt. Does anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

Birthday Diddy...

My youngest Grandson is celebrating his 1st Birthday this weekend. I will not be able to attend his party, which is a total bummer. I sent this little diddy in his Birthday package. I was able to finish this up last weekend when my SO and I drove down to Lawton, Oklahoma to attend his youngest sons graduation from Army Boot Camp @ Fort Sill. It was an awesome experience and certainly makes a person proud to be an American.

I received this fun little package in the mail yesterday. I won a giveaway over @ Michelle's blog the L7 Quilt Co, http://thel7quiltco.blogspot.com/ . It is a Moda Scrap bag. The little bag packs a good punch. It is a 1/2 lb of fabric salvage strips. There were 29 strips, I estimate when cut the strip sizes will range from 1 1/2" - 3". The strips are from the line "Butterfly Gardens" by Kansas Troubles. Thanks so much, Michelle for sending this my way! I am not sure what I will be doing with these fun little guys, any ideas/suggestions???

I am not sure how I feel about this block. In the picture the small dots look very coral/peachie in this picture but, are actually deep pink. It is very bright, but then so is this line of fabric.

At the Friday Night Sew In...BUT confess, I left early. My SO came home and surprised me and offered to "just hang out." We have had such limited time together this past year that when opportunity knocks....you, open the door. Besides, the fact I can honestly say "I like just hanging with him." We ran errands, watched a couple movies and on Saturday night he found a local pizza place that would let us watch the WCHA hockey tournament (by the way my University of North Dakota, Fighting Sioux won!!!). We are both college hockey fans (for different schools!) and since moving to Iowa finding college hockey in this area is not easy. Every now and then we head north to visit family and take in a game. The Sioux now head to the NCAA men's hockey tournament...woo hoo!!!(SO's team the Minnesota Gophers never made it to the playoffs). If you hadn't noticed everything is college basketball. Don't get me wrong, we are thrilled that Northern Iowa has rocked the tournament and is the Cinderella team we want to see take it ALL.

I was in and out of my sewing room over the weekend and I do have a NEW project in the works. It is a spring wall hanging "Bloom" that was in the last issue of Fons & Porter. Nothing fancy but, thought it might help me get out of my funk and think spring!!!

I am home from work and sporting my comfy clothes. I have run my errands and picked up grilled chicken for dinner(somewhat healthy, right?)...so the rest of the evening I can play in my sewing room...woo hoo!!!

Will I be seeing UFO's or will I venture into something "new and fun" for spring. I am not sure...will see what speaks to me first! I know it won't be an all niter as I have to work in the morning. Pictures tomorrow!!!

Jelly Roll Quilt Along...

I am participating in the Jelly Roll Quilt Along over @ Moose On The Porch Quilts. We had to select a jelly roll to use through out the project.

My choice is Bubble Gum Basics, it has me thinking happy thoughts of Spring and Summer. Every two weeks there will be a "guest designer" who will share a block pattern using jelly roll strips. When all is done we will have 12 blocks. This is a challange for me as I am a person who likes to see where they are going and I am having to create without knowing what is coming. I am thinking "so far, so good." My greatest fear is I will end up with just "ugly" strips in the end because I used up all the good ones!

We found a bit of a work around for uploading pictures to the computer. Thank you, to Cara and Mary for the suggestions. These lead us to a solution, or at least a temporary! (funny, how when I made a post asking for suggestions that SO took another look at the problem. I think he was afraid at what more trouble I could create if he didn't help or is that, take control??? Anyhow, I am a happy girl, again!

Computer Issues... HELP!!!

I apparently have either deleted or hidden(so good no one can find it) my photo upload/download capabilites on my PC (HP). My SO can no longer find the program and apparently it is not a priority to him (actually the guy is really busy @ work these days) Sooo...here I sit for a week without being able to post a picture.

Keep in mind I am not computer savvy... Do I to take my computer to a tech and have them find where the old one is stored or if I actually did delete the thing. Or just go out and purchase a new program (which one???), or is there one on line I can download (for no cost)?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

While in Idaho Lynn took me to Hucklebery Patches, in McCall Idaho. She belongs to a wool group that meets there once a month. When we arrived they were just finishing up the monthly Thimbleberries group, so we caught the tail end of show and tell. They were also serving lunch to the ladies in the group and invited us to join them, delicious soup and bread. We spent hours browsing. I came home with a new project and a few things to add to my stash. My friend Lynn does a lot of hand work, it would be safe to say her nitch is hand work and wool. She also incorperates that into her quilting. I can't believe I am writing this and have no pictures of her work, grrr... Anyhow, she shared some of her patterns with me and generously offered up her stash so I could play along. I came home with a few diddy's of my own. She also showed me how to make a Philly's toothbrush rug (work in progress). I had a very relaxing week , got to spend time with some of my favorite people, indulge in my favorite things...including their premium prime rib. YUM!!!

My first attempt at a wool and felt project. I will be back, but I think my heart is in quilting, but what a way to inhance!

Goodbye, Idaho...

Looking back at the ranch, the morning I was leaving. This place is a little piece of heaven. I wish I had gotten more pictures to share with you but, I also want to respect their privacy. They were calving while I was there. I rode along with Lynn & Katie (the dog) on the 10pm watch each night. All was quiet for us but, there were 5 bull calves born while I was there. I hear they are up to 6 as of last night.

BEAUTIFUL SURPRISE... SO, stayed back to work. These arrived Valentine's weekend. The closest town did have a florist and would deliver for a price!!! Thanks bunches honey! It would have been perfect had you been able to join me. You were defintely missed.

The Times, They Are A Changing...

NO...it's not spring yet But, it will be soon!!! Since moving a year ago I have been working 2nd & 3rd shift, including working every weekend, my days off were middle of the week. This can be rough, especially when your SO works days and has weekends off. In other words we were only able to spend hours at a time together. Well, I am happy to say that I am making a career change. I will once again be working days and an occassional Saturday morning, this I can handle. Granted the old schedule provided me with ample "guilt free" quilting time. However, I am REALLY looking forward to having more "together time" even if this means I will be making nightly meals again. Tonight I am packing, I have been able to take a little break between jobs and I am on my way to Idaho to visit family. I am going to surprise my dad, shhhh!!!

The blog has been silent for a week. I am working on some things I can't share at this time. So, I have dug in to my completed projects archives to share some children's quilts with you. Do you see what these quilts have in common?

Ahhh ha! Caught in the act, fondling grama's fat quarters. Besides the adorable little man, what I wanted you to see was the quilt. This was my second attempt at quilting. When I started quilting I had no grandchildren and wanted something that was "unisex." Well, it went together fine but...I have to confess, it took me 4 years to finish; it needed to be quilted and that is not something I am comfortable with, something of which is always a work in the process!

This was my first "attempt" at doing my own thing! No pattern, just colors I thought that would make a fun quilt. This was a gift for the gal who use to do my hair and her baby boy.

This quilt was made for a good friend of mine to welcome the new man in her life, her nephew.

I made this quilt for a co-worker. It is made from one of her scrubs. Whenever she wore the smock I always commented what nice fabric it was and that it would make an adorable children's quilt. Well, one day she took it off and said here you go! It was made for her niece. On the back I managed to salvage one of the pockets for a secret hiding place.

What do these quilts have in common? Well, apparently when it comes to children's quilts I see BRIGHTS! I believe children should live in a happy world and lets face it; brights are generally up lifting but, can border on "GAUDY"... Yikes!

Duchman's Puzzle

My interpretation of the Dutchman's puzzle for the "Circuit Block Party" exchange. This is my first exchange and I did not realize how nerve racking it would be cutting into someone else's fabric. I hope I did the beautiful Asian prints justice. It bothers me that I cut off the birds head but, I really liked the "feathering" print of the body. I hope it's not a disappointment for Heidi. I am looking forward to the next challenge!

When it comes to fabric, I love to touch! These little beauties arrived in the mail the other day they are January fabrics for the "Circuit Block Party" the vitual sewing bee that I am taking part in this year. Click the button on this blog for more details and to follow along. We are a group of 12 woman from all over the world who will be exchanging blocks through out the year. My month is July, to share my fabrics and pattern choice. I have been "looking and looking" trying to decide what I want to share...just not sure, any ideas? Anyhow, these were the fabrics for the month of January and Heidi has asked that they be made into a dutchmans puzzzle block, see here...(sorry, I am not tech savy to put on a simple link, still learning!) This is a good tutorial!

Is it tacky to re-gift?

I hope not! (at least not this type of re-gifting). These were suppose to be Christmas gifts for the kids in the neighborhood. They are now going to be their Valentines! When my machine developed an attitude a couple days before Christmas these were on the table 3/4 done. Well, I am happy to say I am now a head of the game for Valentines Day!

Sophia returned home, end of last week. There was nothing wrong with her per say. She was in need of a good cleaning (this machine does not need oil). I was told to have her cleaned professionally once a year. I have only had her cleaned once before on her first birthday and that was complimentary. We have since relocated to eastern Iowa so I took her into a local certified Huskavarna dealer with a good reputation to do the maintenance. I did not ask what a standard cleaning cost, thinking it would be in the ball park of the shop where I adopted her; The Quilting Connection in Ames, IA. I was blown away when I was told it would be $96.27 I asked if they had to do something more and they said no our standard cleaning is $89.95 + tax. WOW!!! Is it me or does that seem excessive? Of course I paid it and shame on me for not asking ahead of time but, I just never thought it would be a $30 difference (this is money that could have been spent on fabric!) On my way home I called The Quilting Connection to see if their rates had gone up and no they were still $59 but, a 3 hour drive away. I will be doing a bit more research next time before I just drop her off again! I also, bought her a gift. I purchased a small vacuum attachment kit ($12 investment)that will attach to my regular vacuum to help keep her clean. I can also use on computer and other small places...cool!

Now, where did that get put???

I have misplaced myself, my focus, my mojo... I am in a bit of a rut here and scrambling to get out of it. I can't seem to streamline myself to accomplish anything. I think about what I need to do and what I want to do...but, that seems to be as far as it gets. I am not a winter person and when it gets cold I simply want to hibernate. I had all these big plans this year, that I would sew my way through a long winter and take advantage of having to be indoors. Well, here it is mid-January and I have no focus and nothing completed! Sophia has returned home (more on that later) and I have no where I have to be today, so I am heading up to my sewing room to see if I can find my mojo that has been misplaced!

Being wrapped in a quilt makes everything feel better, right? This is Sophia pronounced "sew fee ah." She has been under the weather and is going to visit the Dr today for a check-up and cleaning. Most of the time we get a long very well but she developed an attitude just before Christmas; as a matter of fact delaying a few gifts. She has put on a lot of miles this year both with her sewing feet and in the car with a couple trips up to North Dakota. She also, had a major move and went from living in town to being a country girl. Were off to the Dr.

Plain & Simple... give it consideration

Why do we start a project and not finish? Do other things distract you, or does another project look better, or do you simply loose interest? Well, this simple 153 page book took me years to read...WHY? A friend sent this book to me 4 years ago and I am ashamed to say I just finished it. I can't deny, it was a "s l o w... start" for me and I couldn't keep going. I had something better to do, I got distracted, I am saving it for a trip. Well, the excuses were endless. Anyhow, I picked the book up again and said NO MORE. There was a reason my friend wanted me to read the book. I now know why! It was a light read, that has a deep meaning (it just had a beginning I couldn't get past). It is not only delightful but, insightful. This was a good way to begin the New Year. Perhaps in 2010, I will look at people, things, and life in general differently now... After all "What really matters?" I have not written a book report in years and I am not sure this will intice anyone to open the book (apologies to Sue Bender the author) as I have not done the book justice. It is worthy and I DO RECOMMEND the book. You won't be sorry. You will find yourself asking "Why didn't I read this sooner?"

This sweet little package was from my SO. It was the most intriguing of all the gifts. I had to take a double take when I first saw it. The bow caught my eye. It was the salvage from the figgy pudding line; that I had used to make 3 lap tops this fall. I looked closer; the wrap was also fabric and the tag too! Where did the cute snowman fabric come from? Hmmm...had he gone to the quilt store without me? What...from my stash? Cute, real cute. My SO had snuck up to my sewing room and used various things he found to create this adorable package. He then hand sewed it together. I was not allowed to use tools to open it. That was cheating...the nerve! So, needless to say it took me a while and to be honest it was just too cute to take apart. But, I did! Inside was a note telling me to open my email and my gift would be revealed...It was a VERY nice GC to the SPA! Awesome gift, that I will truly enjoy. He is right... I am spoiled! But hey, who is to blame for that?

P.S. Equally impressive was that he did not cut up any fabric to wrap the gift. He just made it work. His comment was he feared what might have happened if he had... ohh come on... I am spoiled... not mean!!!

This is one of my grandson's this picture was just too cute not to share... It warms my insides everytime I look at it. He does not live close by so I depend on his mom to keep me in the loop. This little guy has such a sunny disposition and those are the most kissable dimples!!! I wish all kids could be this happy!

I have made and finished 3 of these lap tops using Moda's figgy pudding line; each one has had a different color way. My darling daughter (DD) requested I make the first one for a wedding gift: she wanted something special. She had received a quilt from a family friend when she got married which she loves. She knows and respects the love and time involved with quilting. When she saw the first one ( sorry, no picture)she wanted one for herself and then we decided this would be a nice gift we could make/give to my oldest sons girl friend. Well, the idea was good but finding the fabric locally was a challenge. I live in Iowa she lives in North Dakota. I did some calling and made a short trip to get my hands on more of the "figgy pudding." Super simple pattern "Serendipity" was used and a friend of mine quilted them with snow flakes (thanks for meeting my deadlines!). I did use the peppermint twist on the back of all of them; just too cute!!! Click on the pictures to see the details. I just finished the last of the binding this morning and they are in the mail...

This is Anna, the replacement for our empty nest. Can you tell she has had to watch over my quilts before? I can't complain too much about her when I have a quilt on the floor she will walk around it; over and over if need be. It's when she sneaks into my sewing room and trys to read a pattern or magazine that I have issues. She has been known to shredd them; always seems to be when she feels neglected and left at home too much! For the most part she is a joy and does a great job watching over my quilts.

On my design wall... but on hold

This is what is currently on my design wall... but on hold. I am scurring to finish several projects in time for Christmas so this project sits on hold. The pattern is "Sunday Picnic" from Heather Mulder Petersons, "Livin Large." I am anxious to get back to this but prioritys first! I have made 3 lap size quilts using Modas "Figgy Pudding" and bought enough fabric to do some table tops but decided the "Sunday Picnic" pattern was an awesome fit for this line of fabric. What do you think?

These two pieces of holiday candy are bindings I will be using on two little quilts I am working on. The red is the quilt backing. I am working against the clock these days. So much too do and soo little time. Dang if work doesn't throw itself into the middle.

These two quilts were done this fall for gifts. I enjoyed using masculine colors on this quilt to achive a non-traditional baby boy quilt.

I was going for a uni-sex quilt when I picked the yellow & Red for this quilt. I really liked this pattern and think it has a sweet & simple look for a baby. By the way it was a girl!
